Birthday gift: a mug with a photo
The safest design is a shared photo plus a name. Use the original from your gallery, not the downsized copy from a chat, and place the face in the middle of one side of the mug, away from the handle zone. A photo from your last shared experience works better than a portrait because it recalls a moment, not just a face.
A mug for a 30th birthday, or any milestone
For milestone birthdays the number is the design: set large, paired with the birth year or a childhood photo. “30” plus the birth year plus a photo from that year makes a mug that gets passed around the party. The same pattern works for an 18th, 40th, 50th or 60th.
